04 January, 12 Haulage firms in the Midlands have claimed that they are being crippled by continued increases to the price of fuel and many are unsure as to how they may be able to continue in the current economic climate. According to an Express & Star investigation, prices have increased by ten pence since January last year while it has also been shown that fewer litres of fuel were sold during the period of January to September 2011 when compared with the previous three years. Paul Walters of the AA said that hauliers and motorists alike are being forced to cut their motoring as a result of the high price of fuel. The news provider suggested that haulage workers in the area are now fearing for their futures because of the expected fuel price rises and a drop in trade. Last month, head of policy for the Midlands Freight Transport Association Gordon Telling said the increases in fuel price means companies don't have the money to spend on training their drivers.
