10 January, 12 The Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM) Drive & Survive programme has been launched and will help hauliers and fleet operators to reduce their fuel consumption and tackle emissions. Drive & Survive is a green driving initiative, which claims it can help road users cut their fuel usage by as much as 15 per cent. The advice offered to motorists on the course includes keeping vehicles in motion for as long as possible, even when queuing, as this is more fuel efficient than stopping and starting. Furthermore, drivers should carry out regular maintenance on their vehicle, paying special attention to tyre wear and pressures, as in cold conditions this can dramatically influence fuel consumption. Head of training at IAM Simon Elstow said: "We've all got better things to spend our money on than [fuel]. This will help you save cash and reduce your carbon emissions." The IAM also recently advised drivers that in icy conditions it is important for road users to think ahead, as stopping distances are vastly increased and manoeuvring is much more difficult.
