13 January, 12 The likely changes to be seen in the commercial vehicle (CV) sector for the coming 12 months have been revealed. Nigel Base, commercial vehicle manager at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), noted the biggest change to face the industry in 2012 is likely to be the shift from the mid-range rigid distribution truck towards the 3.5-tonne van and the 44-tonne tractor. This is taking place as there is a greater need for flexibility among LCV and HCV operators. Furthermore, Mr Base noted it is exceedingly difficult in the present financial climate to make accurate predictions about the future, but he is confident that the industry will show significant signs of growth by the time 2013 rolls round. His comments follow a recent announcement by the SMMT regarding fuel efficiency for new CV vehicles, as the organisation claimed new cars offer lower diesel consumption than ever before, with fuel efficiency increasing by 29.3 per cent over the last decade.
