Fuel card news: High wind dangers highlighted for haulage firms

19 January, 12
Haulage firms operating across the UK have been reminded of the dangers that high winds can pose to their vehicles.

The operator of the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland has released footage of what can happen when high-sided vehicles get caught in a heavy gust of wind, with the video showing a driver who ignored warnings on December 28th and crossed the bridge despite the excessive winds.

At one point, the vehicle's trailer is tipped on to its side before righting itself once more under the barrage of crosswinds.

Barry Colford, chief engineer and bridgemaster, commented: "We're releasing this footage to warn drivers of the dangers of ignoring restrictions. This driver was very lucky that nobody was killed or injured."

Elsewhere, severe weather warnings were released by the Met Office in the run-up to the festive season last month, with the Highways Agency taking action to close a number of bridges to heavy goods vehicles as a result.

The M4/M48 Severn Crossings in the south-west, the M25/A282 Dartford Crossing in the south-east and the A14 Orwell Bridge were all affected by winds in excess of 70 mph in December.
