Fuel card news: Campaign for evening daylight stalls

23 January, 12
A campaign to shift the clocks in the UK forward by one hour for the whole year round in order to give more daylight in the evenings has hit a roadblock in the House of Commons.

Road safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist has been a supporter of the move since it was first announced last year, but filibustering in the House of Commons last week meant that the discussion to bring the new regime into effect ran out of time and has had to be rescheduled.

It is hoped that by increasing daylight hours in the evening, this will lead to an improvement in road safety across the UK.

David Williams MBE, chief executive of GEM, said: "Poor weather, decreased visibility and bad road conditions are all rife during the winter months and have a serious effect on the rise in accidents and hazardous breakdown situations."

The news follows recent advice published by the Institute for Advanced Motorists, which highlighted the dangers of winter driving for hauliers.

It claimed that the likelihood of snow and ice increases as the days get colder and shorter and as a result, drivers must be more vigilant when working in the darker evenings.
