23 January, 12 The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has claimed the latest drink-driving statistics highlight a lack of responsibility among a section of UK road users. Figures from the Association of Chief Police Officers revealed 7,124 motorists across the UK were arrested during December 2011 for drink and drug-driving offences, with 4.55 per cent of those who were breathalysed failing the test. However, for drivers under the age of 25, the percentage who were found to be over the limit rose to 5.75 per cent. Kevin Clinton, RoSPA's head of road safety, said: "It is extremely disappointing but sadly not surprising that, despite three decades of drink-drive education and enforcement, thousands of drivers were caught drinking and driving." The Institute for Advanced Motorists also responded to the statistics, claiming it is extremely worrying that many younger drivers are failing to understand the message that even one drink could put them over the limit.
