24 January, 12 The Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) project has entered its final phase and could spell a breakthrough in fleet management and eco-driving initiatives, it has been revealed. Funded by the European Union under the Framework 7 Programme, the SARTRE project has three aims at its core - tackling environmental issues, safety and congestion. It has now completed field testing the deployment of road trains of up to three vehicles being led by a lead car at speeds of up to 90 mph. The project is now entering its final phase of using platoons in more unpredictable environments. Carl Johan Almqvist, traffic & product safety director at Volvo Trucks, commented: "Our participation in the SARTRE project enables more efficient and safer transport with the potential of also saving fuel." The technology is being developed to help create fleets of vehicles that can travel automatically along pre-set routes or by following a lead car. The vehicles would be completely autonomous once locked into a fleet, helping to reduce accident figures from human error and increase traffic flows.
