26 January, 12 Haulage companies operating in London and the south-east of England have been warned to prepare for the possibility of fuel shortages over the coming weeks following the insolvency of a major refinery firm. Swiss firm Petroplus filed for insolvency on Tuesday (January 24th) and this has led to the closure of the Coryton refinery in Surrey, Commercial Motor reports. Coryton was responsible for 20 per cent of fuel output in the south-east, leading to the possibility of increased prices and shortages. A Petroplus statement read: "We have worked hard to avoid this outcome, but were ultimately not able to come to an agreement with our lenders to resolve these issues given the very tight and difficult European credit and refining markets." Elsewhere, workers at logistics firm Wincanton announced earlier this month of possible strike action in regard to pay and working conditions, with Unite union representatives ready to lead action at depots at Immingham in Lincolnshire, Kingsbury in Warwickshire and Stock-on-Tees in County Durham.
