10 February, 12 The Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered advice to fleet vehicle managers about driving in icy conditions. As part of the IAM Drive & Survive initiative, the organisation has advised drivers to make some simple checks before taking any journey. These include checking whether their vehicle has ABS or ESP, as well as having de-icer and a scraper in the car. Furthermore, when in motion, motorists should try to stay in higher gears when possible, as this will reduce wheel spin. If motorists should feel their vehicle begin to skid, they are advised to take their foot off the accelerator, disengage the clutch and steer smoothly, as this will help them to regain control. Driver training specialist at the IAM Simon Elstow said: "We all need to respect the weather and make adjustments to deal with it. Being mentally prepared as well as having the right equipment is vital." Find out more about the BP fuel card and start saving now. Posted by Helen Wrigglesworth ![]() |
