Fuel card news: More than 1m drivers over 80

13 February, 12
The Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM) has revealed that more than one million UK motorists are now aged over 80.

Research carried out by the DVLA revealed there are 1,012,399 drivers over 80, while 122 UK licence holders are aged above 100.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "Rather than seeking to prevent older people from driving, we should make them more aware of the risks they face and offer them driving assessments to help them eliminate bad habits."

He added that being mobile is an important part of maintaining independence and therefore older drivers should not face sanctions on their mobility simply because of their age.

The IAM also recently announced advice for all UK motorists planning to take to the roads during the present freezing spell of weather. It advised staying in higher gears whenever possible, as this will help to improve traction and reduce the risk of skidding.
