A significant proportion of UK motorists hold fears that a lack of proper maintenance for roundabouts and junctions could leave them at risk of an accident this summer.

According to the latest AA-Populus poll of UK road users, more than one-third (36 per cent) of UK drivers are currently worried about overgrown verges and grassed areas that obscure their view at many of the nation's junctions.

The same proportion of respondents also revealed they had already seen junctions and intersections where this is the case, with important signage covered by overgrown vegetation.

AA president Edmund King commented: "A mixture of warm and wet spring weather has caused grass and trees to grow so quickly that it has put drivers at risk when making routine journeys.

"Due to budget cutbacks, councils are struggling with controlling the fast growth of trees and bushes and that is increasing the likelihood of collisions."

He added that in a worst case scenario, a hidden Give Way sign could be obscured from view on a section of carriageway where markings have been themselves worn out, leading to drivers failing to stop when required and a significant likelihood of an accident occurring.

Motorists therefore need to have their wits about them at all times to stay safe when travelling in areas where road markings and signage may not be openly apparent. At the same time, councils must ensure maintenance of the UK road network remains a top priority to maximise safety for all.
