How does it work?
-
Today's diesel engines rely on the effective operation of the fuelling system to provide extremely precise control of fuel injected into the combustion chambers for highly efficient, clean combustion. However, carbon deposits do build up on injectors, sometimes to the extent that engine performance is compromised. Shell FuelSave is designed to keep the injectors clean to help maintain the fuel consumption, power and emissions performance of the vehicle. A special engine test has now been developed to demonstrate these effects in a heavy-duty diesel engine.
Tests Proved Shell FuelSave's Economy and Engine Power Benefits
-
Shell's research team of leading fuels scientists ran a 20-hour test using severe hill-climb driving to reproduce extreme engine conditions, simulating approx 40,000 miles of normal operations.

The progress of this test is shown here. In the truck not using Shell FuelSave, the deposits built up, and fuel consumption increased by around 3%.

The truck using Shell FuelSave also showed around 3% better engine power performance compared with untreated diesel fuels.

What is it?
Shell FuelSave is a fuel with an exclusive formulation that is designed to clean the engine. This can lead to better engine performance and increased fuel economy as well as reduced emissions. Shell FuelSave contains a powerful detergent, which helps to clean away and reduce the build up of the harmful fuel system deposits that can collect in a diesel vehicle's fuel injection system, reducing performance and fuel economy.
Shell FuelSave is also higher in cetane than conventional diesel. Cetane is an indication of the fuel's readiness to ignite and a diesel fuel with a higher cetane number will aid combustion. This can lead to the engine running more smoothly with less noise and reduced emissions.
Research has shown that diesel drivers expect more from their vehicles and from the fuel that they buy. Diesel is also a growing market in the UK: the diesel car population has grown by more than 10% over the past 5 years. The new generation of diesel engines for cars and trucks is particularly responsive and can deliver performance which matches that of a petrol vehicle. These new engines may benefit from a higher performance diesel, and that is where Shell FuelSave comes in.
Questions?
Q. What is Shell FuelSave?
A. Shell FuelSave is a new diesel fuel with an exclusive formulation, which is designed to help improve your engine's performance, protect it and enable your vehicle to run more efficiently. The same team of Shell technicians who develop fuels for the Ferrari Formula One cars and have brought Shell Optimax to the UK motorist have created Shell FuelSave, which is also exclusive to Shell.
Q: Can I safely mix Shell FuelSave with other grades of fuel?
A: Yes. Shell FuelSave can be mixed with all other diesel fuels without causing any damage to your engine. However, the full benefits of Shell FuelSave will not be achieved if mixed with other diesel fuels. To achieve the greatest benefit, refuel with Shell FuelSave every time.
Q. Can newer diesel vehicles use Shell FuelSave?
A. Yes. The Shell FuelSave formulation contains a powerful detergent, which is designed to help clean up and control the harmful fuel system deposits that can build up on the precision fuel injection equipment found in modern diesel cars. The fuel injection equipment found in modern diesel cars can perform poorly if there is a build up of deposits on them. Shell FuelSave helps to clean away these deposits, keeping the fuel injection system operating more efficiently and helping to restore the engine's performance.
Q. Can older diesel vehicles use Shell FuelSave?
A. Yes. Shell FuelSave is high in cetane. Cetane is an indication of the fuel's readiness to ignite. A diesel fuel with a high cetane number can aid combustion in older diesel vehicles, leading to the engine running more smoothly with less noise and reduced emissions.
Q. Can heavy goods vehicles use Shell FuelSave?
A. Yes. Shell FuelSave's cleaning properties, combined with its high cetane number, are designed to be beneficial for the heavy-duty engines found in HGVs. Shell FuelSave helps to restore the engine's performance and reduce white smoke and emissions. Fuel economy benefits may also be realised.
Q. How does Shell FuelSave work?
A: Shell FuelSave is a unique formulation, which works to actively clean up and control harmful fuel system deposits. This can help keep the vehicle's precision fuel injection systems operating more efficiently. The high cetane content of the additive aids more efficient combustion. The combination of these effects can lead to more power, better fuel economy and lower emissions in many vehicles.
Q: What evidence do you have that Shell FuelSave is better for a vehicle's engine?
A: The exclusive formulation used to make Shell FuelSave has undergone rigorous engine testing, proving the performance benefits of this diesel fuel. We have extensive test results which show how removing and preventing the build up of deposits in engines, helps maintain designed performance. But you'll only reach its full potential with continued use. Shell FuelSave also contains an anti-corrosion additive for further protection.
Q: How quickly will Shell FuelSave improve my vehicle's performance?
A: Shell FuelSave starts the process of removing deposits from the engine from the first time you fill. As you use Shell FuelSave more, any deposits on the engine's fuel injectors will be progressively reduced, improving your engine's performance. Many older technology vehicles should notice the benefits of the improved cetane quality from the first fill.
Q: What is cetane?
A: Cetane is an indication of the fuel's readiness to ignite. In particular, many older diesel cars perform better when using a diesel fuel that has a high cetane number. This is because it improves the combustion of the diesel fuel, which can result in better starting, less noise, fewer emissions and better fuel economy.
Q: Will Shell FuelSave affect my fuel economy?
A: Shell FuelSave helps to remove performance-sapping deposits from your engine, which can lead to some fuel consumption benefits.
Q: Are you able to quantify the exact performance/fuel economy/emissions/smoke/noise improvement that will be delivered?
A: We have extensive test results that show that all diesel vehicle technologies (light and heavy duty; old and new) can derive a benefit from Shell FuelSave. However, just how much an individual vehicle will benefit depends upon many factors, including age, engine technology, driving style of the driver, how well maintained it is, traffic and road conditions experienced, and so on. In our experience, it is ill advised, and potentially misleading, to make specific quantified claims.
Q: Won't the lumps of deposit that Shell FuelSave removes end up in my engine and damage it?
A. No. Shell FuelSave does not chip deposits off the fuel injectors, it dissolves them and washes them into the combustion chamber where they are burned completely along with the fuel.
Q. How much does Shell FuelSave cost?
A. Shell FuelSave will be priced at the same competitive price as Shell diesel has been. You don't pay a higher price at the pump when you use your Shell CRT (euroShell) card from The Fuelcard People.
