Road safety and breakdown recovery specialist GEM Motoring Assist has offered some important advice for drivers as part of this month's ongoing Tyre Safety Month 2016.

Relating specifically to the growing trend of motorists opting to make use of part-worn tyres, the body claims individuals need to always be aware of the risks this can pose.

GEM road safety officer Neil Worth commented: "Tyres are the only part of your vehicle in contact with the road surface, so they play a vital role in keeping you safe. The price of part-worn tyres can be tempting, but there are big risks involved."

There is no legal minimum tread depth when purchasing a part-worn tyre, therefore people who purchase these items cannot be sure they will receive a product that will deliver a lasting lifespan when installed.

Moreover, quality testing on a new tyre means motorists can be sure they will not have any defects or areas of excessive wear that could increase their likelihood of a blowout. This is not the case for part-worn tyres.

At best, drivers will be investing in a tyre that has already been used on another vehicle and they can therefore never be guaranteed that the product will be roadworthy.

Mr Worth concluded: "If you buy a part-worn tyre with 2mm of tread, it won't be long before it reaches the UK minimum of 1.6mm and you’ll need to replace it. Compare that cost against the investment in a good, new tyre which will come with a full 8mm of tread."
