Efficiency falls under three main sections/areas. Here are some general points:
Management of data - fuel and
incidents/accidents
- Use a simple, effective method of
scheduling when vehicles are due for
tax, service and maintenance, such as
a wall chart or excel spreadsheet
- Track and analyse fuel use and
incident rate
- Prioritise areas of poor efficiency or
high fuel use for improvement
- Assess the root causes of high fuel
use and find the best solution
Vehicle procurement and
management
- Develop a good relationship with
your leasing/maintenance company.
Ensure they prioritise your vehicles for
servicing and maintenance. Insist a
Service Level Agreement (SLA) is put
in place if necessary
Operational management
- Good planning is the key to success
- Use telematics such as tracking and
routing software, but only if they are
right for you
- Produce a practical action plan for
improving efficiency and safety
- Keep vans well maintained. Poorly
maintained vans are guaranteed to
upset/affect drivers
- Prioritise urgent trips, without
compromising efficiency
- Consider local conditions: Avoid
working in busy urban environments
at the busiest times where possible
