Improving Safety

  • Understand your starting point (baseline). Collect information on every incident to understand where the areas of high incidents occur.
  • The information you need to collect is:
    > Date of incident
    > Type of incident
    > Cost of incident
    > Vehicle registration
    > Driver name
  • Prioritise those areas of high risk or high incident levels for improvement.
  • Assess the root causes of incidents and find the best solution.
  • Implement simple changes to help improve your performance (see below for some suggestions).
  • Continue to monitor and review your safety record to find out how you have done.
Options for improving safety can include
  • Ensure drivers know the speed limits for the class of van they are driving.
  • Set out clear policies that cover alcohol, drugs, speeding and fatigue.
  • Ensure drivers take a 15 minute break every two hours.
  • Vehicle selection and specification. Ensure you choose the right van for the job. A dedicated guide 'Van Specification: A guide for the smaller business' is available from the Van Best Practice website, which will help you do this.
  • Vehicle maintenance. Regular servicing and maintenance ensures that the vehicle remains safe and efficient.
  • Daily vehicle checks help to identify any problems early on.
  • Vehicle security, such as additional locks and security systems.
  • Where possible, avoid those times of day that can lead to higher risk.
  • Review delivery and collection schedules to avoid unrealistic deadlines that can lead to increased safety risk.
  • Understand why unscheduled deliveries/collections are occurring.
