The Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM) is calling on drivers across the UK to belt up this Valentine's Day, while highlighting the role friends and loved ones can play in reminding them to do so.

Research carried out by the organisation revealed almost one in five (19 per cent) of Brits do not wear a seatbelt when riding in the back of a vehicle, while nine per cent do not belt up when riding in the front.

IAM director of policy Neil Greig said: "Everyone should look after their loved ones, especially on Valentine's Day. Research shows that one in five occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seatbelts. That's more than 300 preventable deaths a year."

Last month, the IAM also called on the government to implement additional training for young motorists on safety when travelling along rural routes.

Chief executive of the organisation Simon Best noted that 82 per cent of fatal and serious injuries take place on single carriageway roads each year.
