UK drivers are a discerning bunch, so to be named the nation’s favourite car is no small deal.

With that in mind, Motorpoint has released details of which cars proved the most attractive on its forecourts in 2019 and (fanfares at the ready) the winner has been named as the ever-popular Ford Fiesta.

Head and shoulders the nation’s favourite

The independent car retailer saw flocks of buyers in 2019 and by far and away the biggest seller of the year was the Ford Fiesta, beating other favourites like the BMW 3 Series, Citroen C3 and Nissan Qashqai.

That said, a number of regional variations were shown in the results, with the Fiesta taking number one spot in both England and Wales, but being pipped to the top position in Scotland by the Nissan Qashqai.

Interestingly, the model dropped to third place in London, with both the Qashqai and Londoners’ top choice the BMW 3 Series moving ahead.

Across the UK, black was the most popular colour for Fiesta buyers in 2019, with 25.9 per cent of all models sold in this colour. It was followed by white (19.4 per cent), grey (18.9 per cent), blue (13.7 per cent) and silver (9.3 per cent).

The nation’s love affair continues

Mark Carpenter, CEO at Motorpoint, explained: “The Ford Fiesta continues to be perennially popular … thanks to its versatility, low running costs and great savings off list price and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it topping the charts this time next year based on demand already in 2020.”

“It also reflects the continuing overall trend … towards smaller, more budget-conscious and environmentally-friendly vehicles.”

The Fiesta remains one of the UK’s most popular cars ever, with figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealing a total of 77,833 were purchased in the UK last year.

It sold nearly 20,000 units more than the second-placed model of the year – the Volkswagen Golf at 58,994. Rounding out the top ten for 2019 were the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Corsa, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Nissan Qashqai, Ford Kuga, MINI Hatch, Volkswagen Polo and Kia Sportage.

Heather Stark, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, comments: “The Fiesta is a car that captures the imagination of UK drivers like no other vehicle. It remains the number-one seller for those looking for a sporty, economical drive that won’t break the bank.”
