The use of in-vehicle telematics is helping to bring down average car insurance costs for both fleet and private motorists across the UK, new figures have revealed.

According to data collated by MoneySuperMarket.com, individuals who utilise telematics systems to monitor their driving behaviour are benefiting from savings of £212 on average for their annual car insurance in comparison to those who do not use the technology.

Overall, female drivers in the 17 to 19-year-old age category were found to be the most likely to hold this form of cover at present – making up 24.1 per cent of all telematics quotes – while all drivers (both men and women) in this age group could save on average more than £400 a year by having this technology installed in their vehicle.

Kevin Pratt, car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, commented: "Having a black box fitted to the car to monitor driving behaviour not only provides an insurer with a greater knowledge of the driver, but it can also influence driving habits as a user is more aware their driving is being monitored."
