Colin Tourick’s article on fuel cards “How to take control of your fleet’s fuel expenditure,” (September 4), covered some useful ground, but may I offer a correction or two?
Fleet managers who use commercial rate fuel cards do not “target drivers spending more than they should,” as they know in advance exactly what drivers will pay, regardless of location. Fleet managers are notified by email or fax (their choice) every Friday of the fixed nationwide price for the coming week.
A key point about the single invoice is that it should be VAT registered and comply with the EU Sixth Directive, so that VAT can be reclaimed. Some may not, so managers should check. As for a fuel card being “a form of credit,” it is worth adding that this is interest-free credit for, depending upon when refuelling occurs, up to two weeks.
Fuel cards only being free for “larger clients” may once have been true, but The Fuelcard People has never charged either set-up fees or, or management fees for reports etc. If you can pass a normal credit check and spend £500 monthly on petrol, diesel or both, you qualify for a fuel card.
The really serious inaccuracy concerns discounts, apparently only for “big fleets” and only “a fraction of a penny per litre.” In reality, any of our fuel card holders, large or small, could happily confirm that they pay, typically, between 2p and 3p per litre below national average pump prices, the discount off pump is even higher at motorway service areas.
Are there relatively “few fuel card operators” in the UK? There are probably about 80, although I’ll concede that most offer only one or two cards each. I beg to differ about the small shortlist, though. With no axe to grind in favour of any particular card, we offer more than half a dozen options, including such major brands as BP, Esso, Shell and Texaco.
These points needed to be clarified, although I understand that a short article could not cover the subject in depth. There is much more that could be said, though, for a fair reflection of the service, savings and security benefits of fuel cards.
