Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced the creation of a new Sensory Steering Wheel, which has been designed to help to boost safety for drivers.
Developed as part of the manufacturer’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems programme, it’s hoped the device will serve to reduce driver distraction.
Hot and cold at your fingertips
The device works by heating and cooling sections of the wheel’s surface to inform drivers when to turn, change lanes or to warn when approaching a junction.
It’s hoped this will be particularly useful to drivers when faced with hazardous conditions or poor visibility, as well as acting as a sensory stimulant to keep them alert behind the wheel.
Alexandros Mouzakitis, JLR’s electrical research senior manager, commented: “Safety is a number one priority for Jaguar Land Rover and we are committed to continuously improving our vehicles with the latest technological developments, as well as preparing the business for a self-driving future.
“The ‘sensory steering wheel’ is all part of this vision, with thermal cues able to reduce the amount of time drivers have to take their eyes off the road.”
He added that the firm’s research shows drivers using the new wheel are able to discern even minute changes in heating and cooling dynamics, meaning feedback from the wheel can be quickly and easily understood.
Heather Stark, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, comments: “Innovations like these will pave the way for a safer automotive experience for all in the years ahead. Thinking outside of the box will be crucial to making our roads a safer place.”
