The amount of people in love with driving remains as high as ever, new research published by the AA has shown.

According to the latest AA-Populus poll of over 20,000 UK motorists, more than 80 per cent of respondents stated they greatly enjoy their time spent behind the wheel, with over half also stating they will be taking to the roads as part of their summer getaways this year.

It isn't just the experience of driving that continues to make people enthusiastic about their vehicles though, as almost half (49 per cent) said that the social interactions they enjoy when out motoring help them to create a strong emotional attachment to their car.

The research found that almost half (47 per cent) of drivers will be taking their car with them on holidays to mainland Europe this summer, while 58 per cent said that, even if they do not take their own vehicle, they plan to drive when on vacation.

Meanwhile, the data revealed the significant number of positive life-changing events that UK motorists associate with driving, with one in 20 Brits either having proposed or been proposed to in their car, while 14 per cent shared their first kiss there.

Overall, the AA's research showed driving is not just about the mundane daily commute for the majority of people, with more than three-quarters (76 per cent) stating they like to explore new places behind the wheel and 41 per cent saying some of their "fondest memories" are of family road trips.

Ben Robb, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, adds: "The UK public remain as in love as ever with the experience of driving, and long may that continue!"
