A new campaign has been launched by vehicle recovery specialist and driving safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist, which calls upon UK road users to carry out regular eye examinations in order to stay safe.

Carried out in partnership with Vision Express, new research published as part of the campaign has shown how while 92 per cent of drivers believe they currently meet the legal minimum requirements for eyesight, only 60 per cent are able to say what this is.

Furthermore, 15 per cent of respondents revealed they have not taken part in any form of eye exam since taking their driving test – on average it means this group have had an eye test in at least 14 years.

Responding to the research, GEM road safety officer Neil Worth commented: "GEM has long argued the case for compulsory regular eyesight testing for drivers of all ages.

"The present situation relies on individual drivers taking responsibility for their own eye health. That's why it's so important to get regular checks."

He concluded that failure to see properly is one of the biggest dangers that motorists can face. All drivers should therefore take the matter of regular eye exams seriously, for the safety of themselves, their passengers and all road users.

Ben Robb, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, adds: "Your vision is precious and plays an important role in ensuring the safety of all when driving. It is therefore essential that anyone taking to the roads has their vision regularly checked."
