Greater consistency in the management of risk is needed among many of the UK's professional driver fleets.
This is the conclusion of Tony Ashford from civil engineering and construction contractor Alun Griffiths Contractors, who told IAM RoadSmart that many businesses are currently falling short in their commitment to the proper oversight of their fleets.
From vehicle maintenance to driver training, companies need to have the necessary processes in place to ensure their staff are doing all they can to prevent dangerous incidents out on the roads.
Mr Ashford stated: "Although, in the majority of cases, these are not deliberate violations, people sometimes do the wrong things for what they feel are the right reasons – it takes demonstrable leadership and discipline by all to ensure that the correct driving behaviours and awareness are maintained at all times."
Indeed, he concluded that businesses need to take responsibility for their fleets and do all they can to mitigate risk, for both their own employees and other road users.
Ben Robb, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, adds: "Managing the risks associated with fleets is imperative for companies of all sizes. When professional drivers take to the road they are a representative for their company, and that means they must always be trained to the highest degree when it comes to safety."
