Winter has well and truly arrived in the UK and with it has come high winds and plenty of snow.
As a result, motorists up and down the country are being urged to pay extra attention when taking to the roads, with road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist offering some helpful advice to drivers.
Drivers should always listen out for weather updates and plan their journeys accordingly. It is also recommended for drivers to carry an emergency kit with them in their car at all times.
This should include a charged mobile phone to call for help, blankets to keep warm, a torch, jump leads, first aid kit and a supply of sand or gravel to help if you get stuck.
In addition, all road users are advised to only travel when it is absolutely necessary, as the best way to avoid problems on the road is simply not to be there.
Finally, the organisation advises that motorists always tailor their speed to the conditions they are facing – when snow or heavy rain hits, it is essential for drivers to slow down.
GEM road safety officer Neil Worth commented: "If you’re out and about when snow hits, then the simple preparation measures suggested above really can make a big difference to help keep you safe."
Ben Robb, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, adds: "Drivers need to be vigilant when planning journeys in the winter. They need to make sure that their vehicles are fit for the weather.
"The Fuelcard People's guide to winter maintenance covers everything you need to prepare your car for the harsh weather."
