Logistics providers across the UK should ensure they are making use of HGV-specific sat-nav devices, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) has argued.

RHA chief executive Richard Burnett stated that it is "a matter of common sense" that this should be the case, with some roads not able to accommodate the wide and heavy loads that these vehicles typically have to transport.

"HGV-specific sat-nav systems have the ability to make journeys for HGV drivers safer and more cost-efficient and that's a big issue for us," he said.

However, the RHA chief went on to argue that the message should also be that technology must not take the place of drivers using their own judgement.

It is imperative that professional drivers remain alert at all times and pay attention to local signage to avoid instances of vehicles becoming stranded or blocking carriageways that they were not suitable for.

The RHA issued its statement following the proposal of new legislation to ensure all professional drivers are making use of appropriate sat-nav devices that have been programmed for commercial use.

Ben Robb, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, adds: "It makes sense for professional drivers in vehicles that may not be suitable for certain roads to be utilising sat-nav systems that take into account the size of many HGVs and make appropriate route choices to keep communities safer."
