Highways Agency engineers are to begin works aimed at tackling a significant bottleneck along a key stretch of the A40 carriageway near Gloucester in the new year.
Beginning on January 5th, a £300,000 project is to get underway focusing on the Over Roundabout and surrounding routes, which aims to deliver a boost to the local economy and make lives less stressful for travellers in the area.
The A40 and the Over Roundabout are the primary link between Gloucester and the rest of the UK, meaning this stretch of the carriageway typically suffers from high volumes of traffic and associated delays during peak travel times.
As a result, the agency has committed to both expanding and changing the layout of the roundabout over the coming months, with the project to focus on streamlining traffic flows and ensuring travellers will be able to reach their destinations with less hassle in the years ahead.
Highways Agency project sponsor David Stock said: "The work is one of 14 Highways Agency pinch point schemes taking place in the south-west [of England].
"The pinch point programme provides smaller scale improvements that can deliver big returns by easing congestion and making journey times more reliable for road users as well as helping to boost local economies and drive economic growth."
In addition, businesses in the area will benefit from improved vehicle efficiency when using the route, as they are less likely to be stuck in stop-start traffic for a prolonged period.
Mr Stock added that a new lane is to be created on the eastbound approach to the junction that will help to considerably lower queuing times once this ambitious project is completed.
