The UK commercial vehicle (CV) sector witnessed a considerable upturn in registrations last month, new data has revealed.

According to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), total CV registrations rose by 12.4 per cent to 49,197 units during the month, while overall sales figures for the year to date stood at 239,356 – up 8.1 per cent on the same period in 2012.

In total, van sales for the month stood at 43,066 units and truck registrations were up by 29.7 per cent on September last year to 6,131 – highlighting a significant annual rise in demand.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes commented: "Encouragingly, van registration levels have stabilised – up around ten per cent in the month and year-to-date – after a variable year that reacted to model changes and changeable market conditions."

He added that year-to-date truck demand is also back to 2012 levels "after a slow start" to 2013.
