Euro NCAP has announced the award of four new five-star ratings as part of its latest round of safety testing for vehicles coming to the European market.

Each of the Suzuki SX4, Peugeot 2008, Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and Jeep Cherokee achieved the agency's top honour for safety, with the Cherokee achieving maximum points for both adult and child protection.

Safety assist technologies including seatbelt reminders and a driver-set speed limit were highlighted as particularly effective systems for the CLA, while the SX4 achieved a 92 per cent rating for its driver and passenger safety.

The 2008 was particularly strong in the pedestrian protection area, with its bumper scoring maximum points for the safeguarding of pedestrian legs in an accident, while the front edge of the bonnet also gave good protection to the pelvis.

All of the results have now been published in detail at the Euro NCAP website, with the organisation's first round of crash avoidance test results to be published on October 29th.
