A project carried out by Volvo Group in Gothenburg, Sweden has highlighted the considerable emissions and efficiency savings that can be achieved by a joined up approach to fleet management.

With upwards of 6,500 deliveries being made in the Swedish city each day, the scheme involved a streamlined traffic management plan for more than 400 vehicles, ensuring drop-offs in close proximity to one another could be made more swiftly.

Overall, the project revealed emissions reductions of 30 per cent on average for companies taking part, while levels of congestion in the city were also reduced.

A switch from diesel to biogas, biodiesel and hybrid vehicles for many fleets also helped in this reduction, with some firms reporting emissions savings of up to 80 per cent.

Olof Persson, president and chief executive officer of Volvo, commented: "With more energy-efficient vehicles, fuels with a lower environmental impact and smarter logistics, it is possible to achieve significant improvements."
