The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered a range of helpful tips for motorists planning to take to the roads this summer.

According to the organisation, drivers should remember the acronym POWDER to get their vehicle ready to meet the rigours of summer driving.

This means focusing on having enough Petrol; regularly checking Oil levels; topping up Water in the radiator and windscreen wash bottle; examining bodywork, mirrors and windows for Damage; testing Electrical connections and examining Rubber, meaning tyres should be properly inflated and be inspected for excessive wear.

By following this simple set of guidelines car owners are more likely to avoid costly breakdowns and ensure their vehicle remains roadworthy and efficient throughout the summer months.

Indeed, IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger concluded: "It's best to deal with minor problems and repairs as they happen, as they can get very expensive if left to build up over time."
