A significant proportion of UK motorists do not take the risks associated with fatigue seriously when driving.
Research published by road safety charity Brake showed 55 per cent of car owners ignore basic safety advice regarding taking breaks on long journeys, with men more likely than women to do so – 14 per cent of male drivers have driven constantly for six hours or more compared to just three per cent of female motorists.
Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive at Brake, said: "A large proportion of the driving public are scarily confident they can push on through on long drives without stopping. In reality, regular breaks … are essential for staying alert."
She advised stopping every two hours to ensure motorists are well rested and awake when taking to the roads. Furthermore, getting a good night's sleep of at least seven hours is advised before embarking on any extended journey.
