The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued a response to the publication of the latest road casualty statistics in the UK from the Department for Transport (DfT).

According to the DfT's data, the number of individuals killed on the country's roads fell by eight per cent in 2012 to the lowest recorded level since records began in 1926.

In addition, serious injuries were down by 0.4 per cent and the total number of UK road casualties dropped by four per cent.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: "IAM welcomes a return to the long-term improvements in road safety that the UK has been rightly recognised for. Last year was a clear warning for government that complacency in road safety cost lives."

Earlier this month, Mr Greig also responded to the government's introduction of new on-the-spot fines for careless driving, stating it is important that this new measure do not downplay the seriousness of this type of offence.
