The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued a statement highlighting its concern over handing fixed penalty notices to careless drivers.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig stated: "Careless covers a wide range of poor to reckless driving behaviour that often merits further investigation."

He added the issuing of these notices is a major change in traffic law and may downplay the seriousness of offences.

Furthermore, the government must ensure budget cuts do not lead to more officers being taken off the roads, as they will be needed out in force to enforce these new rules.

Mr Greig's comments follow the announcement by transport minister Stephen Hammond earlier this month that individuals who hog the middle lane of the motorway could now be fined for careless driving.

The minister also revealed the standard on-the-spot fine for motoring offences has now been raised to £100, including using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
