Individuals living in the West Country have been offered advice on the dangers of utilising part worn tyres, as drivers in and around Bristol could be putting their lives in danger.
Vehicle safety organisation TyreSafe has issued a warning to motorists in the area that there have been a number of recent cases where individuals have unknowingly purchased illegal part-worn tyres that have subsequently failed.
Dean Gray, trading standards investigator for Bristol City Council, said: "People can buy second-hand tyres without any problems but we have seen some horrific cases, including a tyre sold as new, but which was in fact sixteen years old and blew up on the motorway."
The news follows the recent publication of data from Delticom, which revealed how up to one-third of UK motorists are now heading online in order to buy tyres for their vehicles.
Figures showed 36 per cent are now using the web to make purchases – up from 27 per cent in 2012.
