The Highways Agency has unveiled a new scheme that is aimed at reducing congestion on the UK's motorways.
'All Lanes Running' will enable drivers to use the hard shoulder as an extra lane, thus boosting the capacity of some of the nation's busiest and most important routes, Auto Express reports.
It is thought parts of the M25, M4, M3, M62, M60, M1 and M6 will be included in the project and it will build on existing initiatives that allow motorists to temporarily use the hard shoulder if they are instructed to by overhead electronic signs.
Although recent statistics released by the Department for Transport suggested that motorways ran a little more smoothly in the year ending April 2013, there are still many roads that are notoriously gridlocked at peak times.
Andrew Page-Dove, asset development manager for the Highways Agency, hopes the new scheme will alleviate some traffic problems and he told the news provider that All Lanes Running could also boost road safety by 15 per cent.
