Controversial plans to increase the speed limit on UK motorways have not been completely discounted, it would seem.

Although the government has remained relatively quiet about proposals to raise the maximum speed to 80 mph in recent months, road safety minister Stephen Hammond has suggested that a trial run could take place in 2014.

Speaking to Auto Express magazine, he said the government could be in a position to make an announcement this autumn.

"It is not dead. We are thinking about it; we are thinking about how we could trial it rather than go to a consultation," he was quoted as saying.

This is an issue that has divided the nation, as some groups believe that enabling drivers to travel along at 80 mph would reduce congestion, while others have inevitably raised questions about road safety.

Mr Hammond said it is important to get the "right speed on the right road" and the government has demonstrated this by reducing the limit on roads that pass schools to just 20 mph.
