The UK continues to trump the rest of Europe when it comes to new vehicle registrations, figures released by the Department for Transport (DfT) have confirmed.
Some 711,000 cars, vans, lorries and buses were officially given the green light for use on British roads in the first quarter of 2013, which was up by 6.5 per cent when compared with the corresponding period in 2012.
This was the seventh consecutive quarter where registrations have increased and the statistics confirmed the UK was the only major EU member state to report growth in this area in 2012.
Recent monthly studies by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have suggested that demand for new models from the continent has waned in 2013, whereas car sales have held up surprisingly well in the UK given the tough economic climate.
The DfT report also revealed that low-emission vehicles are proving popular among a growing number of British road users, as more and more people recognise the importance of good fuel economy.
