The UK has been described as the 'whiplash capital of Europe' in a new report from the Association of British Insurers.
According to the ABI's findings, the proportion of injury claims for whiplash by those involved vehicle accidents in the UK stands at 78 per cent – more than double the figures seen in many other European nations.
For example, the ABI revealed the proportion in France and Denmark is currently 30 per cent, while in Spain it is just 31 per cent and 35 per cent in the Netherlands.
ABI head of motor and liability James Dalton commented: "With an annual whiplash bill of £2 billion adding an extra £90 a year to the average motor premium tough action is needed to tackle this problem."
Whiplash is caused by a violent movement of the neck and is most commonly associated with road traffic accidents. It can be extremely painful and symptoms can last for months in some cases.
