Road safety charity TyreSafe has offered a number of helpful tips for motorists planning a getaway during the coming May bank holiday.

According to the organisation, the increasing number of tyre-related callouts received by emergency recovery providers is a growing worry in the UK and therefore car owners should remember to be vigilant about tyre safety when planning a long trip.

Chairman of TyreSafe Stuart Jackson stated: "Most drivers take the sensible precaution of checking their oil and water levels before a long journey and the same should also apply to checking the state of the tyres."

Minimum tread depth should not fall below 1.6 mm and all tyres should be examined for wear and tear regularly.

Mr Jackson also recently urged drivers to be wary of the dangers of purchasing part-worn tyres.

He argued that while these items might be cheaper than buying new, they also present an added risk of blowouts, as car owners cannot be sure of their exact state when they are fitted to the vehicle.
