Ford has published research highlighting the popularity of its driver aids, with rear-view camera technology shown to be among the most popular systems with motorists.

According to the firm's data, upwards of 55,000 vehicles equipped with this technology were sold in Europe in 2012 – with 11,000 sales taking place in the UK.

This represents a 45 per cent upturn in demand from 2011.

"Parking is the latest example of a tough, stressful task rendered simple by technology," said Ford chief engineer Christof Kellerwessel. "Before GPS, you had to read a map or ask directions. Technology that was once unaffordable or far-fetched can now improve the lives of many."

The news follows a similar announcement from Nissan, with the manufacturer having this month unveiled its new Around View Monitor system.

It features cameras built into the front grille and one on each door mirror, delivering 360-degree visibility around the vehicle for the driver.
