The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has responded to a government report outlining potential new measures to tackle the problem of drug-driving in the UK.
IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: "Setting limits based on a drug's effect on driving opens up a whole new approach to enforcement and sends a very strong message that it is unacceptable to have drugs in your system behind the wheel."
He added that this is a positive development for a safer future in the UK, but more research needs to be carried out to ensure roadside testing to ascertain drug levels in the blood are up to scratch.
Earlier this week, the IAM also issued a response to plans by the lord mayor of London Boris Johnson to introduce new measures to protect vulnerable road users in the capital.
Mr Greig argued that the creation of new "quietways" for cyclists is a positive step forward, but the programme should also ensure road safety for all groups is taken into account.
