The Department for Communities and Local Government has highlighted council efforts to cut congestion over recent months following the introduction of a new roadworks information website.

Working across highways authority boundaries and visited by more than two million people since its launch in May last year, roadworks.org has become a major success story in helping to highlight those routes which are currently suffering from longer journey times for travellers.

Updated regularly by councils, the data covers 140 separate highway authority zones and offers details of the more than 7,000 roadwork projects that are taking place across the country each day.

Local government minister Baroness Hanham commented: "Getting councils to open up their information is revolutionising local government and encouraging a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurism."

The news follows recent data published by the AA, which revealed how 57 per cent of drivers across the country currently feel the state of the UK's transport infrastructure has gotten worse over the last three years.
