The AA has carried out research highlighting the majority of Brits' views that congestion charging in major cities across the country would be a bad idea.

According to the organisation's findings, just 29 per cent of respondents felt the introduction of fees for accessing city centres would provide benefits in terms of reducing traffic issues.

Indeed, just six per cent said they strongly supported the notion, compared to 33 per cent who were strongly against – a ratio of five to one.

Edmund King, AA president, said: "Some ten years since congestion charging was introduced in the capital and four years on for the no vote in Manchester, drivers seem to have little appetite for similar schemes in other cities."

Meanwhile, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) earlier this month congratulated Transport for London on the tenth anniversary of the capital's congestion charge scheme.

FTA head of policy for London Natalie Chapman stated that without the initiative, traffic in the capital would undoubtedly be much worse than it presently is.
