Citroen has become the first vehicle manufacturer to fit black box technology to its new models as standard.

A company statement read: "Citroen is creatively turning to technology to reduce the cost of younger buyers owning and insuring a brand new car by fitting its C1 Connexion special edition with a telematics 'black box' as standard."

Utilising data sent directly from onboard telematics systems, insurers are able to tailor costs to the risks associated with each individual and their driving ability.

The technology will ensure competent drivers receive the best deals, as they can demonstrate their safety via statistical evidence and it is therefore a positive step towards the insurance industry treating each policyholder as an individual.

The news follows a recent announcement from founder and chief executive officer of ingenie Richard King, who argued that black box insurance could be up to 25 per cent cheaper than traditional policies over the coming months.
