Road safety organisation Brake has announced it is organising a nationwide campaign to highlight the five youngsters each day who are seriously hurt or killed on the UK's roads.

Organising its Giant Walking Bus event, Brake hopes to highlight to the public the dangers posed to children when they travel on foot and to ensure drivers act responsibly at all times when in charge of their vehicle in order to mitigate this risk.

"It's a chance to teach kids about road safety and why walking is healthy and eco-friendly. But it's also about showing your local community why kids' safety on foot is so vital," commented Julie Townsend, Brake deputy chief executive.

She added that drivers are also being urged to cut their speed when travelling in the vicinity of schools and in urban areas where kids might be more likely to be out on the streets.

Last month, the charity also announced the launch of its new 2young2die campaign, which will focus on teaching young people the importance of responsible driving habits.
