The mandatory use of seat belts in vehicles across the UK is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2013.
In commemoration of this landmark road safety coup, the AA has held a poll highlighting the public's attitude to these articles, with 95 per cent of respondents accepting they have a positive impact on driver and passenger safety.
That said, the research also showed that six per cent of drivers do on occasion flout the law and travel while unbuckled. Furthermore, 44 of the more than 17,000 people asked said they never wear a seat belt.
AA president Edmund King said: "Along with the backlash against drink-driving, acceptance of the seat belt law shows what can be achieved in persuading motorists to break dangerous habits and vastly improve their chances of survival in crashes."
The news follows the launch of Brake's new road safety campaign 2young2die, which is targeting youngsters across the country in the hope of teaching them about responsible driving habits.
