The AA has published advice for motorists regarding the most common hazards on the roads this winter.

According to the motoring organisation, more than half (54 per cent) of winter car insurance claims come as a result of adverse weather, with running into parked cars the most common issue (ten per cent of all claims at this time of year).

The next most popular accident is the rear-end shunt, as many drivers fail to anticipate the extra stopping distance required when driving in snow and ice.

"We may not be able to do much about the weather, but we can take precautions to reduce the risk of a drive ending in disaster," said director of AA Insurance Simon Douglas.

The news follows recent comments from the Buying Guide for Driving James Mills, who argued in favour of Brits investing in winter tyres in order to boost their level of grip when out and about during periods of frost and snow.
