The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered some helpful advice to anyone who plans to drive home for Christmas this year.

According to IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger, preparation is key to having a smooth drive home and this includes making essential checks, such as examining tyre wear and pressures, packing books and games to keep the kids entertained and also stowing away some snacks to keep up everyone's spirits.

Furthermore, families heading home for Christmas should share the driving responsibilities, as this will help mums and dads to avoid fatigue.

Mr Rodger commented: "Take the time to prepare and plan your journey from start to finish to drive your way to festive harmony."

Meanwhile, the IAM earlier this month advised on staying safe when out and about over the coming winter months, with an increased likelihood of adverse weather meaning vehicle owners could benefit from the fitting of winter tyres in order to improve grip.
