Road safety charity Brake has highlighted the numerous dangers that can impact on motorists across the country over the winter.

A survey of 1,000 UK drivers by Brake and Churchill revealed that just one in six vehicle owners follow safety advice and avoid driving in heavy snow, while nine out of ten added they have underestimated stopping distances when roads are icy.

Meanwhile, almost half (47 per cent) of respondents said they often fail to leave the recommended four second gap to the vehicle up ahead when the weather worsens.

Julie Townsend, Brake's deputy chief executive, commented: "The most important message is to err on the side of caution and not drive if it's snowing, forecast to snow, or there are other dangerous conditions."

Breakdown services provider Allianz Global Assistance also recently urged drivers to be extra vigilant this winter, advising that winter tyres could significantly improve grip and handling in adverse conditions.
