The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered its support to new proposals aimed at cracking down on drink-driving by the Department for Transport (DfT).
New measures are set to include vehicle forfeiture for repeat and dangerous offenders, as well as the scrapping of the option for those suspected of drink-driving to request a blood or urine test.
It is hoped this will put an end to delaying tactics for those who know they have had a drink and then got behind the wheel of a vehicle.
IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig argued: "Drivers need to know about the devastating consequences of drink-driving and drink-drivers need to know that they will be caught and punished."
Road safety minister Stephen Hammond added that the government is keen to see a significant reduction in alcohol-related accidents, after last year's 11 per cent rise was the first time the figure has gone up in the UK in the last 30 years.
